Summary

It's November 1991。 George H。 W。 Bush is in the White House, Nirvana's in the tape deck, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer。

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie。 They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio。 Both have good reasons for wanting to get away。 For Charlie, it's guilt and grief over the murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer。 For Josh, it's to help care for his sick father。 Or so he says。 Like the Hitchcock heroine she's named after, Charlie has her doubts。 There's something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn't seem to want Charlie to see inside the car's trunk。 As they travel an empty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly worried Charlie begins to think she's sharing a car with the Campus Killer。 Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie's suspicion merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

What follows is a game of cat-and-mouse played out on night-shrouded roads and in neon-lit parking lots, during an age when the only call for help can be made on a pay phone and in a place where there's nowhere to run。 In order to win, Charlie must do one thing--survive the night。

I really enjoyed this one, probably more than I liked Home Before Dark(the ending ruined that one for me)。 I loved the premise and the execution of the story, it kept my interest throughout the book。 I thought the book was a fast paced read and I kept turning the page to find out what was going to occur next。 Just when I thought the main character had everything figured out there was a couple of huge twists。 Needless to say this is one wild car ride that will definitely have you second guessing I really enjoyed this one, probably more than I liked Home Before Dark(the ending ruined that one for me)。 I loved the premise and the execution of the story, it kept my interest throughout the book。 I thought the book was a fast paced read and I kept turning the page to find out what was going to occur next。 Just when I thought the main character had everything figured out there was a couple of huge twists。 Needless to say this is one wild car ride that will definitely have you second guessing your choices。The book takes place in 1991 and I think that is an important fact because I'm not sure that someone would think this way in 2021。 The story also takes place in a span of only 6 hours。 We follow Charlie as she is leaving college after her roommate, maddy's murder by a serial killer。 Charlie was with Maddy the night of the murder and is having trouble dealing with the loss。 Charlie isn't willing to wait for a ride from someone she knows so she ends up hitching a ride, with a guy named Josh that she met at the ride share board。 Nothing could possibly go wrong in this scenario。The book is set up in a timeline of events as they unfold throughout the night。 The only goal is to n survive。 Will this road trip be the worst decision of Charlie's life 。。。more

Riley Sager is an immensely talented writer。 He knows how to create these dark characters that screw with your mind and leave you thinking。 Each one of his books his writing only continues to improve and the stories get stronger。 I'll be honest that I think Home Before Dark remains my favorite book of his, but Survive the Night is truly a great piece of literature, it's just kinda different from what he's written before。 This novel begins with a young woman who is recovering from the murder of h Riley Sager is an immensely talented writer。 He knows how to create these dark characters that screw with your mind and leave you thinking。 Each one of his books his writing only continues to improve and the stories get stronger。 I'll be honest that I think Home Before Dark remains my favorite book of his, but Survive the Night is truly a great piece of literature, it's just kinda different from what he's written before。 This novel begins with a young woman who is recovering from the murder of her best friend and embarks on a road trip to her Nana's house with a stranger。。。。and will she survive the night? That's the premise。。。。But this book is so much deeper than that。 For a book that 65-70% of it is written set in a moving Grand Am car on the road it never feels stale or boring, it's a gripping page turner and psychoanalysis of a woman's struggles with grief and overcoming loss。 I could have done without the epilogue。 I don't really like what it does to the arc of the overall book。 I'm being vague purposefully ofcourse to not spoil for anyone。 But it kinda bugged me。 But, fans of Sager will for sure still enjoy this as different as it is, it still has the creepy vibe of his backlist, and anyone that likes a psychological thriller should pick it up。 4。5 ⭐️ Thank you to NetGalley and Dutton for the advanced reading copy。HAPPY PUB DAY!!! 。。。more

Riley Sager can do no wrong。 But her characters。。。well, wow。 That was one helluva car ride。 And it had me screaming at the protagonist, Charlie, a young college student recovering haphazardly from trauma。 Leaving behind a caring, concerned boyfriend and a dead roommate, Charlie gets into the car with a relative stranger。 There was a lot of suspense and twists, and I WISH it had been a little less。。。confusing。 Sometimes too many ingredients ruin the pot and that almost happened here。 The saving g Riley Sager can do no wrong。 But her characters。。。well, wow。 That was one helluva car ride。 And it had me screaming at the protagonist, Charlie, a young college student recovering haphazardly from trauma。 Leaving behind a caring, concerned boyfriend and a dead roommate, Charlie gets into the car with a relative stranger。 There was a lot of suspense and twists, and I WISH it had been a little less。。。confusing。 Sometimes too many ingredients ruin the pot and that almost happened here。 The saving grace? Full review coming soon。 I am trying to wrap my head around what I just read。 First impression upon finishing is that ‘Survive the Night’ is too melodramatic, ironic, and artificial。 Sager is becoming the Michael Bay of summer blockbuster scaries。

This book took place over a nighttime that flew by, I couldn’t wait for the next page to see what would happen and I enjoyed it so much。⠀I think Riley Sager is a masterful storyteller。 I guessed at a few things, but was mostly taking a stab in the dark, and was surprised at how everything came together。 I have already seen some mixed reviews。 My advice, read this for yourself。 Some of the reviews really confused me because the reviewer didn’t see what I saw, but that is the nature of books and reviewers。 As for me, I am recommending it with 5 Stars! At least one star for every time I paused to think “WTF!”。⠀Guess I am stuck waiting until Sager’s next book。。。。 。。。more

Survive the Night is the fifth thriller written under the Sager nom de plume and weaves together the atmosphere and plots of film noir and nineties slasher movies to create a scintillating and thoroughly entertaining thrill ride。 It's November 1991。 George H。 W。 Bush is in the White House, Nirvana's in the tape deck, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer。 After her roommate and best friend Maddy was murdered by the Campus Killer at Survive the Night is the fifth thriller written under the Sager nom de plume and weaves together the atmosphere and plots of film noir and nineties slasher movies to create a scintillating and thoroughly entertaining thrill ride。 It's November 1991。 George H。 W。 Bush is in the White House, Nirvana's in the tape deck, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer。 After her roommate and best friend Maddy was murdered by the Campus Killer at Olyphant University in New Jersey, Charlie feels she must get away for some respite。 She blames herself, and feels guilt and shame, for Maddy’s slaying after letting her walk home alone from a bar back to their dormitory after an argument had ensued。 Her deceased body was discovered the following day with multiple stab wounds and a missing tooth; a trophy collected by the Campus Killer double murderer who stalks campuses looking for victims。 She decides to leave in the middle of the semester and high tail it back to her home in Ohio, so she posts a flyer looking for someone who might be going her way to give her a ride。 Josh Baxter, a janitor at Olyphant, claims to be driving home to Ohio state to care for his sick father。 Or so he says。 As they travel an empty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly worried Charlie begins to think Josh is not being truthful about who he really is。 He's secretive and won't let her know what's in the boot of the car and she strongly suspects she’s sharing a car with the Campus Killer。 What follows is a game of cat and mouse played out on night-shrouded roads and in neon-lit parking lots, during an age when the only call for help can be made on a payphone and in a place where there’s nowhere to run。 Can Charlie survive the night? Riley Sager has done it again! In this compulsive, deliciously devious and endlessly twisty thriller Sager manages to take well-worn horror tropes and elevate them to the next level。 It is a nail-biting and nightmare-inducing road trip with the narrative taking place over a single evening, yet it's often hard to fathom exactly why Charlie repeatedly makes ridiculously stupid mistakes。 There is plenty of 90’s nostalgia to be had via the mention of the music and movies of the era too。 This is one for those who enjoy unreliable narrators。 The first half of the story focuses on setting the scene, introducing the cast of characters and Charlie coming to the realisation that her knight in shining armour is possibly a wolf in sheep's clothing who may plan to do her harm。 However, past the halfway point the wicked twists come thick and fast and I was completely unprepared for the change of pace。 It's dramatic, addictive and genuinely shocking when all the twists, which were plausible and explosive, hit you。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Charlie’s transformation amazed me & I really rooted for her。 Packed with movie references, movie (old & classics) buffs will enjoy this book a lot。 I think Sager took maximum advantage of this throughout the book, influencing Charlie’s behavior & decision making。 Overall, I think this book is a wonderful entertainer。 With limited casting, it was not hard to guess the killer towards the end。 The ending itself wasn’t really big on the “wow” factor, but it was enough to satisfy my expectations。 Now, I think It’s time to read Sager’s other books! Thanks NetGalley, Hodder & Stoughton Books for the digital ARC! 。。。more

I was drawn to the premise of this book - what if you realised you were in the wrong place, with a very bad person- and the visual style。 Although the book initially drew me in I felt it lost its urgency a third of the way in and struggled to retain that momentum until the final section。 Having said that the ideas behind the book and the enjoyment I gained from the first third means I would seek out another book by this author。(Copy provided by Netgalley in return for an honest review)。

Riley Sager is one of my all time favorite thriller authors, so I was dying to get a copy of Survive the Night。 I’d seen some mixed reviews come in from other early reviewers, but I didn’t read any of them prior to reading the book, because I wanted to go in fairly blind。 I’m glad I did, because I ended up absolutely loving this one。 Of Sager’s 5 novels, it’s up there at the top of the list with me as one of my favorites of his! After the murder Let me just start by saying that I LOVED this one! That combined with the fact that she can’t always trust what she “sees” happening because of her mental movies lead to a tense, fast-paced, gripping story, and I devoured every second of it。The novel is told sort of like reading a script or play – you get to see the location of each part of the book through headings, for example “INT GRAND AM”, so you know it’s set inside of the Grand Am car that our main character Charlie is in。 In addition to that element, Charlie is a film student who is a big movie buff。 There are several movies, directors, and actors mentioned throughout the book – it really is an homage to classic film in addition to being a thriller。As I said before, I adored this one, from beginning to end (especially the end!) and rated it 5 big stars! I think this would be an excellent mini-series! Lots of twists and turns, a narrator who can’t trust herself, and an element of being ‘trapped’ in a car with someone you can’t trust。 What more could you want?! I can’t wait to see what Sager writes next!I’d like to thank Hodder and Stoughton for my advanced copy of the book。 It was my pleasure to provide an honest review。 Survive the Night is out June 29th in the US, and will be a great summer read! Be sure to pick this one up! 。。。more

This was one of summers most anticipated titles for me, and it pains me to say it really wasn’t for me。 Riley Sager’s heroine in this outing is a college student whose best friend had been murdered by the Campus Killer, a serial killer who takes a tooth from each of his victims, of which there have been three so far。 As killers go this seemed a wildly tame trophy to me, but hey, they’re easier to take than say, an arm。 At any rate, Charlie, our heroine, decides to take a leave from campus, gentl This was one of summers most anticipated titles for me, and it pains me to say it really wasn’t for me。 Riley Sager’s heroine in this outing is a college student whose best friend had been murdered by the Campus Killer, a serial killer who takes a tooth from each of his victims, of which there have been three so far。 As killers go this seemed a wildly tame trophy to me, but hey, they’re easier to take than say, an arm。 At any rate, Charlie, our heroine, decides to take a leave from campus, gently letting down her hunk of a boyfriend, and leading him to believe they still will have a future。 Sager sets his book in the early 90s before cell phones or ubers so Charlie ends up hitching a ride off a campus flyer。 The driver,Josh, is cute and charming and seems like a totally normal dude to drive through the night with to get to family in Ohio。 Or is he? Before long Charlie begins to suspect this guy might be more than he says he is。 The problem is, Charlie, as all unreliable narrators do, has stopped taking her prescription medicine and as a result has moments where she effectively zones out and sees her life playing out like a movie blurring the lines between fantasy and reality。 I’m not going to start to break down my issues with the book beyond one critical plot point I figured out which was a bummer。 Additionally the story really didn’t take off until nearly the fifty percent mark leaving a fairly suspense-less suspense novel。 I’m sure I’ll be in the minority here, and in this case I’m okay with that。Thanks to Dutton books for the advance copy。 。。。more

Thank you to Dutton Books for gifting me a review copy of Survive the Night by Riley Sager。 This is my third Sager book so far, and he really does manage to get me every time。Lately, every time I read a thriller I guess at the killer really early on in the book, which takes some of the excitement out of it。 But Sager always keeps me guessing until the end, which I appreciate。It’s the early ‘90s and Charlie Jordan’s roommate and friend has been murdered by a serial killer。 She just can’t stay at Thank you to Dutton Books for gifting me a review copy of Survive the Night by Riley Sager。 This is my third Sager book so far, and he really does manage to get me every time。Lately, every time I read a thriller I guess at the killer really early on in the book, which takes some of the excitement out of it。 But Sager always keeps me guessing until the end, which I appreciate。It’s the early ‘90s and Charlie Jordan’s roommate and friend has been murdered by a serial killer。 She just can’t stay at school anymore and is trying to find a ride back to her hometown。 While putting up a flyer on a ride-share noticeboard she meets Josh, who’s heading her way。 So they agree to split the gas and go together。 But the more time they spend together in the car the more Charlie is convinced that Josh is actually the serial killer。 There’s just one problem…Charlie isn’t sure what’s real and what she’s imagining any more。A big chunk of the book takes place in the car, and I will admit I found it a little slow to get into at first。 That could also have something to do with me not generally enjoying unreliable narrators and there is a lot of ‘is Charlie unreliable or isn’t she’ going on, to begin with。My only other complaint is that Sager doesn’t seem to have ever driven a stick shift, or at least not recently enough to remember how it’s done。 He kept saying things like Josh went up a gear to get up the big hill。 I used to drive for a living, and have owned more manual gearboxes than automatics in my life, so I can tell you that’s not how gearboxes work, and if he kept going up gears he’d end up rolling back down that big hill。 I know that's a super minor issue, but little things like that really bug me in books because they pull me out of the story。 To be fair, I was reading an ARC so perhaps those mentions have been fixed in the final version。Otherwise, once I got into the story I was completely hooked and basically binged it in a day。 I did not see the two big main twists coming at all, which was delightful。 The story is mostly told from Charlie’s point of view, but there are a couple of chapters thrown in to give you a little taste of what’s going through Josh’s mind too。 At one point I was so wrapped up in the story, and at a very intense part too, that I didn’t hear my husband come home。 So, when he walked into the room I literally jumped, and maybe screamed a little。 Don’t worry, my heart rate eventually returned to normal。In short, if you’re a thriller-lover I definitely recommend you get your hands on this one! 。。。more

Twists and turns and ups and downs make Riley Sager’s “Survive the Night” a roller coaster of a read! Will she be able to get help if she needs it? Is she strong and smart enough to take care of herself? Or is she just playing a “movie in her mind”?
